Thread: What Car Should I Buy?

  1. #61
My cousin got a 2006 infinity G35 salvage for 7k, after buying parts for it it came to a total of 10.5k cost. It was worth it he got an awesome car 6speed manual, at half the price. You just need a guy to give you a dealers number, so he can place bids on the auction.

Why? If you know how to work on a car and do it right, it's not a big deal. I don't need insurance, either. I'm getting ready to buy a 2006 Pontiac GTO for ~$3500. It has ~$2000-3000 worth of damage AT MOST. It has an LS2 and T56 with 42,000 miles on it. It's an $18000 car for $6-7000?

Theres too many problems that can be involved in it. is the frame straight? resale value is gonna suck, have a good mechanic look at it. I know a shit ton about cars, shit im going to school for them and i wouldn't get a salvaged car, but more power to ya.

    why a gto?

I have 3 friends going to UTI in Mooresville, NC. As far as a mechanic, I consider myself one. I know what to look for. I'm not worried about a bent frame. Our local collision center only charges $250 to straighten the frame and reweld any cracks. Other than that, I can do everything myself. Resale value will suck, but you can still come out ahead of the game (at least in NC). In NC, you can get a salvage title turned into a rebuilt title (helps for resale). But, I don't ever plan on selling the car. I plan to drive it until it can't be rebuilt anymore.

I chose a GTO because they're fairly cheap at salvage auctions compared to their actual value. And I've always wanted an LS2 engine and T56 tranny. I don't know of many cars that come stock with 400 hp for the price I'm looking at, and it can be built later down the road. Do you have any other suggestions other than a GTO (serious question)? I figured a Corvette or newer Camaro would be extremely costly (for the auction and parts). I'm not a fan of the f-body style cars or any Mustangs, either.

If you your not a fan of the F-bodies then theres nothing else i can really suggest that would be fun. you could always do a C5 corvette, or you can get a single cab short bed pickup with the 5.3 vortec motor which is an LS block and those are usually good sleepers and a good start for a 'junkyard' turbo build. If you like imports you can always get an Evo or an STI, maybe even a salvaged supra from the years 93 to 97

edit: you could look into the 02-03 SVT cobra cars, come supercharged, although expensive to mod for big power since they are OHC motors.

I've got an '86 C10 with a rebuilt 350 in it. To me, trucks are for working (and that's what this one is for). I like to keep it American. I'm not a huge import fan. I'm going to stick with a GTO. I don't know anyone, nor have I seen anyone, around my area with one. F-bodies and Mustangs are way to common.

ahh i see, i like building truck for the whole sleeper thing, but yeah. I know this isn't much of a 'car enthusiast forum' but you should def post up a build thread of the gto when you get it.

I most definitely will. I will also keep it updated on Facebook for anyone who is friends with me. I plan to go to the auction next month, so I'll create a thread when I get back.
