Tech How to Receive SMS E-mail Updates on Non-data Phones with Gmail

For those of us who don't have data-phones, it'd be nice to receive and reply to e-mails on our phones. I decided to write a tutorial on how to get e-mail updates on your phone. With this method, you will get a SMS when you receive an e-mail, but the e-mail will be truncated to fit the SMS 160 character limit. However, for the most part this is good enough as you can figure out from who the e-mail is, and what it is regarding. If it's important, you can then just get online and open up the e-mail yourself. You can also reply to the e-mail SMS updates, but the sender address will be your phone number @ your carrier.com, not your e-mail account.

    1. Login to g-mail and click the settings link in the top right corner

    2. Click the filters link at the top

    3. Select new filter.

    4. For the "To:" field, enter your e-mail address, and then hit Next Step.

If you didn't already know, most cell phone have an e-mail address, usually it's just your number @ the carrier company. If you don't know your cell phone email, I've provided a list of the most common carriers with their e-mail structure below:

    Alltel
    [10-digit phone number]@message.alltel.com
    Example: 2125551212@message.alltel.com

    AT&T (formerly Cingular)
    [10-digit phone number]@txt.att.net
    Example: 2125551212@txt.att.net

    Boost Mobile
    [10-digit phone number]@myboostmobile.com
    Example: 2125551212@myboostmobile.com

Nextel (now part of Sprint Nextel)
    [10-digit telephone number]@messaging.nextel.com
    Example: 7035551234@messaging.nextel.com

    Sprint PCS (now Sprint Nextel)
    [10-digit phone number]@messaging.sprintpcs.com
    Example: 2125551234@messaging.sprintpcs.com

    T-Mobile
    [10-digit phone number]@tmomail.net
    Example: 4251234567@tmomail.net

    Verizon
    [10-digit phone number]@vtext.com
    Example: 5552223333@vtext.com

    Virgin Mobile USA
    [10-digit phone number]@vmobl.com
    Example: 5551234567@vmobl.com

    5. Check off "Forward it to:" and enter your cell phone e-mail. After that click Create Filter

You're all set now, hopefully you don't get too many e-mails, or your phone will be ringing off the hook!
