Thread: Teen Depression & Suicide

    Discussion Teen Depression & Suicide

    Teen Depression and Suicide
    Don't let them slip away...

I've wanted to bring this topic up for a long time but I have never had. So, here it is. I'd like to dicuss Teen Depression and Suicide. I've noticed alot of suicides and alot of people being depressed and alot of people and parents miss it because they just think there teens going through a phase or its just a sign of weakness. I understand its entirely normal to feel "blue" occasionally, or to feel down for a while after something bad happens. For teenagers (or anyone for that matter) with major depression however feelings of sadness and hopelessness may last for weeks or months and can eventually dominate their teenage lives. They lose interest in activities they used to enjoy, and relationships with family and friends can begin to suffer. Depression can also lead to poor school attendance and performance, running away, and feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness and it doesn't go away very fast.... still others contemplate suicide. Depression is NOT a sign of weakness.. It is a real medical illness.

And the vast majority of teens with depression can be helped with treatment, which typically includes counseling and/or medication. But the sad and unfortunately, most teens with mental health problems do not get the help they need and when depression isn't treated, it can get worse,
last longer and prevent teens from getting the most out of life. How common is depression among teenagers? Major depression strikes about 1 in 12 adolescents. In any given 6-month period, about 5 percent of 9- tp 17-year-olds are estimated to be suffering from major depression. All to often, depression is left untreated because people fail to recognize the symptoms and believe that it is just normal sadness, a phase that a teen is going through, or a sign of weakness, this can be a terrible mistake

It is important to know the symptoms:
    • Sad or irritable mood
    • Loss of intrest in activities that were once enjoyable
    • Large changes in appetite or weight
    • Loss of energy
    • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt
    • Difficulty concentrating
    • Frequent thoughts of death or suicide
Suicide can be a deadly outcome of depression. Teens who are depressed are much more likely than other teens to attempt suicide. Among teens who develop major depression, as many as 7 percent (or 1 in 14) will commit suicide as young adults. If a teenager thinks or talks about suicide, it is important to take the threat seriously and seek professional help.

The reason I made this Thread/Topic is because i've had some close friends that have commited suicide and I have major depression but I take pills for it, and I have tryed to kill myself once, at a time in my life which I thought my life was over. Please, no rude remarks this is a serious topic and its not something to laugh about because in the United States every 18 minutes some in the U.S. dies by suicide and every 19 minutes someone is left to make sense of it. Please feel free to dicuss if you have major depression or know someone who has it.

I had them when i was about 8-15 years old, because I got bullied all this time and my parents really couldn't do anything, of course they called the parents from the guy that bullied me, but that doesn't helped...

So my time when I was about 8-15 years old was pretty fucked, That person that bullied me is still in my class and doesn't bully me anymore, but I still can't stand him , but I'm not that person to beat someone up if I'm angry, I'm the last person on earth to beat someone.. okay, if I get attacked, I defend myself, but I had so many situations I just wanted to beat someone and I just couldn't do it...

I'm not that depressiv anymore I think, but I lost a lot of self-confidence and It's hard to gain that back...

I still have only one REAL Friend, hes not one of these "school-buddies", he's a real friend and when I got bullied he was always by my side, hes the only friend I can talk with about everything.. really everything...

Sure, I have some buddies, but I doesn't really make something with them like drinking and stuff...

I do not really suffer from much depression, I skipped most of the going out getting stoned and drunk shit and parties, I keep to myself all of the time.

So, With that being said I am not afraid to make friends, But most friends I make are druggies or drunks or pill heads thus I stopped, The only thing I really suffer from is anxiety.

IE Thinking I have cancer, or constantly worrying about something that does not make sense.

dude, doesnt that suck? once you get out, whether it be graduating high school or grade school it all goes away when you leave. Once you hit a certain age you just stop caring, or you realize the bully isn't going anywhere with his life, and you more than likely are.

i have noticed that even in the workplace, or in college. there are times where people wont accept you, but that's completely fine. there's 26,000 people on my college campus (quite a few of which are dumb farmer kids or dumb prep's) and theres so many people that i'm bound to make friends with people eventually (which i've started to do.)

and gent's, life is extremely depressing. however i've noticed that if you keep yourself involved with people, you wont have time to stop and think about how depressing your life is. (but that's just me.)

    Dallas Center-Grimes?

You should see some of the jocks in my Geology 100 class -- The class does live up to its title "Rocks for Jocks"

As for depression most teenagers go through one stage or another in their life with it.

Of course, thinking about things 'without you' is pretty depressing, i.e. 100 years from now when all of us are gone, what it will be like, what it will be like for us when we die / after we die. What the future holds for us. Not even in 100 years though does it hurt - imagine 50 years from now, when you are your parents age, and most of your relatives, uncles and aunts, your parents and grandparents have all passed away. That hurts to think about.

I'm totally in your situation.. 2 very close friends, some close buddies and some loose ( or however to call it ) buddies...

    @Twisted
I envy you.. Not because you are depressed or tried to kill you but because you can speak about it and apparently are undergoing therapy.
In Germany it's not that easy.. If you contact a therapist and people know this you are marked as a psychotic. You can even loose your job because "you are not focused enough" or something..
I am depressed.. or to put it correct I am suffering from a mental disease with depression as a symptom..
I do not speak about it with anybody except my two best friends ..
And the persons i would tell last about it are my parents.. I dont know but I think my parents have absolutly no right to know what I am thinking or feeling.. and I guess many young people think similar. For this reason blaming the parents or, what you did, partly blaming them is wrong.
Nevertheless it's an important topic and thumbs up for informing about it, regardless of the answers
