I say we start from SCRATCH the old system, make it simple.

Require a reason as to the rating, and report abuses.

Just make it stand out more this time, possibly similar to current system?

Edit: Couldn't we just take out all the ratings from the new system, put in "Plus Rep" and "Neg Rep" instead? Then have a textbox appear, for you to write your reasoning. Then we could go into our cp/profile and look at the reasons, the way the old one was.

My suggestion:

Use a hybrid of the two systems.

-Use the standard old rep system, require a reason for "+/-" rep.

-Only NEW difference, keep the two symbols from the new system, and use those as the buttons to rate.

-People would (hopefully) be able to check their ratings, and reasonings behind those ratings, and be able to more easily report abuses.

-Should cut down on abuse a lot, by requiring reasons.

-Lets face it, the new rep kinda sucked, but in a way it proved the idea did work. People were getting repped more, people were noticing it a lot more. It was heavily abused, but it was getting used, unlike the neglected OLD system.

use my idea, so lets call the running total karma, so the base karma u can add to a person wud be 1 , only working with whole numbers here so round

then 1 * (ur posts * .01) + (activity/3) + longetivity

so from looking at kensei he wud getz me , bout 20 or so rep for rating me,

idk these are just random numbers, there might be a much nicer formula,

idk if theres a variable to see the total # of words a person posted, cuz then u can divde that by post count and factor that into the equation ( to see if he is a spammer or not)

no. The way it was in the old rep system is if the repper had a shitload of rep the you would get more rep points. I like the way it worked. If you impress people who are big in the community (It's generally harder to) you get big rewards.

It should be got rid of as it stands IMO because it has been trashed by abusers.
I like the system as an idea, even though it was adapted from an other site.

It is better than a standard rep system, because you see a real profile of the user, both in terms of the rep(s) they get, and in terms of rep(s) they give. (Interesting Brandon might say.)

Opting out as David suggested is one way to improve it -but it would have to work both ways. You can't have people opting out, but still getting repped by others.

I am totally behind plaz on this one. If you can't back up your rating with a reason for it then you probably are a prick IMO. I'm sure it would be an easy mod so that when you reply to a post (ie quote), you get an option to rate it, but otherwise you don't.

BTW: Rating abuse - There are different sorts.
False positives, False negatives, and just effing stupid. (maybe there are more)
What I mean by stupid is like when somebody puts up a bit of artwork say, and it gets voted as agreed.... ?????

I did not really see much of the old system.
I have seen other interesting rep systems that work though.
My fav' one is a virtual cash system (The cash is just points really).
You can give w/e amount to someone for a nice post, just an award type of thing.
And you can also use in other ways. ... Jut an idea to think about.

boom. They get big points if they get rep from people who have alot of rep. It was never abused to my knowledge except for when I released a very special file and I demanded rep before i shared it lol but that was just to end a debate between me and plaz. In the end I earned most of my rep by helping people and posting good content as did others. I liked the old rep system. It was clean, fresh, and easy to use.

I'm fairly neutral about it, since I'm new. I have no idea what the old system was, but by the looks of it, people prefer it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if there's any possible way of having both, that would probably work best. (By using the rating system as a more casual way of voicing your opinion & the old way as a serious, more in depth way to rate someone.)

Well if you keep the current system, and put the old one back in, at least then everyone is happy.

People can actually have a valid reputation, but the rating would reduce spam and one word responses which could be achieved otherwise by a rating saying Agreed, Thanks, etc.

I agree, but also I think everything should have a fresh start, (which clears up the present invalid data.) If anyone really wants to trawl through old post again for whatever reason, well they can.
Whatever system is used though, I personally am insistent that all judgements be backed up by a comment of some sort. Otherwise you will still get people using it for hidden flaming and etc.
If people can't be bothered to type a short sentence such as, 'Hey - nice photo!', then they are not fit to be judging other people IMO.

Also you could have it so that a rating that becomes old, drops out of the system.
This way people who have a bad rep can 'reform', and also you won't have things like an inactive user seeming to be the king or something.

We have two new milestones with the rating mod!

1) As of this post we have 7,335 total ratings! Thanks guys for using the new system!

2) I have done my first two rating resets today manually through the database. I removed all the pwned ratings that Reaper Sheep and Speedylocs gave out. I will create a script today that will make it easy for mods to take care of abuse.

The moderators / administrators will be able to edit single ratings, or remove entire set of ratings, or reset ALL rating for a certain user. This will be to their discretion!

I can go either way, some people dont like it because some people abuse it, and some people actually use it the way its meant to be used. I get pwned a lot for some reason. (All of them are legit I think)
