I also have a USB cable, and I have been able to "transfer" an MP3 on my phone's memory, allowing me to simply "select ringtone>music>filename" Ofcourse phones differ greatly, but anyone with a Sony Ericcson or even a USB cable should be able to do the same.

I use this all the time. People who make their own ringtones put them up on here. and if you don't like the ones made, I think you can make your own from this site. All you need is some sort of email on your phone or have it capable of text (one of the two) and it will send you the tone.
