I agree it's mostly sappy pedophile crap, but there are a few gems out there. Ghost in the Shell (1995) is very good and the Cowboy Bebop series is good overall. If you like The Matrix (1999) then you'll probably like GITS.

I completely forgot about Vampire Hunter D with the dark comedy character Dunpeal. I just haven't seen it as much as the other few. Akira had an interesting sci-fi plot, but I didn't like the dialogue and directing in parts.
