LightScribe is a process where specially made recordable CD and DVD media can be labeled using a LightScribe DVD recorder. Currently LightScribe is only monochromatic, and labels fade over time. LightScribe was invented by HP and has been licensed to several other companies such as BenQ.

Google ftw. (define:lightscribe)

so it prints directly on it?... so nothing is required except a lightscribe DVD burner or do you need special media also?

yes

No, you need lightscribe enabled cd's / dvd's.
Don't know what will happen on a regular media, but i dont think it can be good for the media and your burner...

its just something extra, like all HPs with burns have it now, youll use it once and only because you saw the light scribe logo when buying discs and then ull be like oh thats cool but its not cool enough to spend extra cash for special discs

lightscribe is a function built into DVD burners enabling the drives, when flipping the disk over (so the read part is facing up), the laser burns an image onto the cover of the disk. problems of lightscribe is, as restated, the images fade, not sure about how stable the actual device is, (its rather new), and the disks are more money. yes you do need to buy special lightscribe disks, you can't just use any blank disk you got.
