View Full Version : ZomgStuff Possibly Closing Down

Well today I was taking a look at the invoices from our current host (slicehost)`earlier today, and I just realized at the insane amount of money I've spent on hosting alone.
http://i48.tinypic.com/2resivr.jpg
At the end of this month, I'll have spent almost $500 on hosting. Well here's the problem, nobody donates and all this money is coming out of my pocket. When I worked at Best Buy this wasn't a problem since I was making $12/hour working 20 hours/week. But now I'm a TA for a programming class at my college, which pays minimum wage and the hours are sporadic, with some weeks averaging maybe 3-4 hours. And I don't have the time right now to be working 20 hours/week due to my hard course load. Right now my bank account is slowly depleting because I also have other things that I need to buy, and my current job just isn't cutting it for those things + ZomgStuff.
Right now Slicehost is a VPS, which is considerably more expensive than shared hosting. We used to have shared hosting (bluehost) but they kicked us out because they told us that "we used too many resources." The forum has slowed down a bit in the recent months, and perhaps we can maybe jump back down to shared hosting.
If shared hosting doesn't work out, then I'll be forced to shut down ZomgStuff - permanently. Obviously this would be the last thing I'd want, but if push comes to shove, I won't have any other options.
So perhaps you guys can help me find a good shared host. Here's some things that I'm looking for in shared hosting
SSH access - an absolute must.
Sub-domains - preferred, but not required
Reasonable price - it's hard to say what that is, but I'll check it out
Reputable company with good reviews
Not anal about you using too many resources - if for some reason you take up too much of the CPU cycles for a small period of time, they won't suspend your account and hold your database hostage (like godaddy).
Obviously the two draw backs to having shared hosting are performance and latency (ie: longer load times).
Since I don't ask for donations, if you guys aren't even willing to find ZomgStuff a new home I'll realize that all my effort goes in vain, and there's no reason for me to keep putting in the effort into the community myself.
Edit: All of this will in largely depend on whether I get my job as a TA again next semester - we'll see how things go, I should be find out before spring classes start up again. Perhaps I'll manage to someone afford to keep ZS running. I'll try to sit down and figure out my personal finances. Although donations would still be nice.

I have root on debug-inc.com I can clear it with my buddy and see if he will give you root. You get subdomains and only have to worry about keeping the domain registed.

why don't you bring back ads to gain some extra money. You just can't tell people to click on them. That's how we got fucked over and not payed the last 2 times.

Does anyone know of any good ad-services that don't require a paypal account for payout?

Can't you get your PayPal account back? We could try giving Google Ads a try again?
If by any chance you do shut the website down, we need to find a free form of keeping all our members in touch. It seems our community bonds best on Skype.

I would gladly donate when I have the money which is not so often due to me having to pay off $600 in tickets. But on top of that, I have a paypal account but I have no idea how to use paypal to donate.

Dude I just got here and you're saying the place is shutting down? What's the problem? Currency? Server? Hosting Bill?
I know I'm a new member and yet to meet anyone else but I'd hate to see a forum go down the drain I just joined. Since I have a couple of domains hosted my buds server that's going no where I can ask him to point the servers to this site. I could probably talk him into giving free hosting
What it'll include also
Unlimited bandwith
unlimited space
Unlimited sub-domains
unlimited sex
So i'm saying there's hope for this site to stay open if you'd change to our server.

You may be onto something here, you could raise funds for the hosting by selling your body for cash.
WIN!

If you give me a price I would be interested in buying some ad space on here.
Id also like to see some daily stats for the site if you dont mind.
I can pay via epassporte since you dont have paypal I assume?
Or maybe wire transfer

I'm currently in the process of trying to get my paypal back, I'll let you guys know how it goes.
Edit:
Alright, so I went to my bank today and opened up a new account. So far so good, I was able to enter my account number without paypal telling me that it's blacklisted. I'm waiting to verify my account, should be 2-3 business days. I'll keep you guys updated.
1. Make a new e-mail address. "zomgstuffDONATE@yahoo.com"???
2. Make a new PayPal account.
3. Give us the email address and link to donate to you.
I've seen people insert little PayPal "donate" buttons like this one:
https://www1.jisedu.or.id/webapps/donate/paypal_donate2.gif
4. Now me and all of my fellow ZS members can donate.
__________________________________________________ ________________________
I'm willing to throw in $5 and if like 8-9 other people are that could pay you a month plus extra.
You can always transfer these funds to different PayPal accounts and bank accounts you know?
If $38 dollars a month is the problem, then you need people to be able to donate.
Also the advertisement thing sounded like an excellent idea. A couple banners here and there wont hurt, but true you got to find a good advertising company to help you do it.

what an interesting website
does anyone else get the php error at the top of the site?
winningfreak
12-30-2009, 03:56 AM
nope, it could just be that the admins are testing a new script or something.
I would also pitch in when I had some money ( not to often right now with the economy and my decline in work ) but ill still toss some in here and there :)
