Ive decided to make this thread to help out all the new members on Zomgstuff. I hope this helps them all out, if the have never been on a Forum Community before.
What are Sticky Threads?
Sticky threads are meant to answer common questions. They do not represent definitive answers nor are they meant to represent the ultimate statement on any given topic.
Let's Review
1. The purpose is to provide answers to commonly asked questions. This is useful because it stops the same question from being asked over and over and over again. Stickys are useful for keeping the signal up and the noise down. That's it.
2. Stickys are not to be construed as the final answer. There are too many points of views to consider any single answer as the best answer. Time also introduces new ways of viewing old questions. So if you feel a topic needs a fresh discussion, by all means open up a new discussion.
Please do not consider a sticky post to be the definitive answer or statement.
How to Create Great Discussions - Good Titles and other tips
A title that accurately describes the topic under discussion will attract those who have something to say. Vague titles are easy to overlook, which can lead to an unsatisfactory response.
Non-Descriptive Titles:
Help!
newbie here
i have a question
now a word about...
Notice how those titles say zero about what the discussion is about? A computer/gaming expert will not know that a post entitled "Newbie here" is a discussion about a computer/game problem or error. This is how forums work. Accurate titles are critical. To get the best experience at Zomgstuff (or any other forum), do yourself a favor and create a post title that accurately states the topic of the discussion, then post it in the most appropriate forum. You will be rewarded with lively responses and informative answers.
Excellent Titles:
Call of Duty 4 - Problem / Error
World of Warcraft Discussion
How do I transfer music?
Limit Discussions to ONE Topic
It is to your benefit to limit discussions to a single topic. This assures that those who know something about World of Warcraft will spot the title of an World of Warcraft discussion and drop in to answer it. Adding a separate discussion about Warcraft III in an World of Warcraft discussion as a "side-discussion" is a sure way to not receive an adequate response about World of Warcraft.
On forums, the most informative and useful threads contain little to no side topics. A discussion is generally either on topic and useful or it is off topic and less useful. Starting a new thread when you have multiple topics is a good way to ensure that those who know about World of Warcraft will see the discussion, as opposed to overlook it because it's buried in a discussion about Warcraft III.
Following the above advice will assure your posts will generate meaningful and useful responses.
How to Start a New Discussion
The first thing to do is visit the main page of the site:
http://zomgstuff.net/
Then pick out the relevant forum topic appropriate for your discussion. For example, if you have a computer question, you can scan down the page and click on the link for the Support & Request forum. Or if you have a question about a game, you can put your question in the Game Discussion forum..
Let's say you have a computer bug question. Scan down the page and click on the Support & Request forum link. You'll find yourself here:
http://forum.zomgstuff.net/forumdisplay.php?f=132
To the left of the black lettering indicating what forum you are in, there is a button entitled http://forum.zomgstuff.net/images/techtwo/buttons/newthread.gif (http://forum.zomgstuff.net/newthread.php?do=newthread&f=132). Click on that button. This is how to start a new discussion or ask a question.
Having Trouble Registering?
Some may have difficulty registering with the forum. If you are encountering a problem registering an account.(example: you click link and it says Zomgstuff Database error).
You can come to back to Zomgstuff and send a Email to Mr. Hasselhoff or UgLy-NeRd or Spart.
Thats it for my new members tutorial.
